Mungret set to redevelop monastic complex

AS part of the Mungret Heritage Society plans to redevelop the local monastic complex, a community scrap metal recycling day has been organised for August 25 to raise funds. Mungret Heritage Society is the umbrella organisation  for a wider steering group that wants to promote and improve the area around Mungret. Limerick County Council, the OPW, the National Monuments Service and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, are represented on the group which is launching an ambitious programme that will include allowing for easy identification.

Nearly 1,000 questionnaires have been distributed throughout the community to assess the population profile and their feeling towards and understanding of the heritage of thearea.
Arising from the research into the plan there will be an autumn series of lectures on the heritage of the area and ultimately a publication on Mungret’s heritage from the earliest to modern times.
It is hoped that one of their first projects will be to establish an access to holy well of Tobar Phadraig.
The heritage society is in negotiation with West Limerick Resources for financial assistance with a number of projects; foremost of which is the provision of information panels throughout the Mungret area.
In the longer term, it envisages a looping walkway connecting the Monastic Complex, Mungret College and Mungret Village.
It also hopes to establish a riverside walk between Ballinacurra Creek and Tervoe Creek to reconnect the Mungret community with the Shannon.
At the suggestion of the Society both walks have been incorporated by Limerick County Council into the Local Area Plan, which also foresees improvements to Mungret Village.
The area between the Monastic Complex and Mungret Village contains all the built and natural heritage that gives Mungret its special character and identity.
Mungret Community Metal Recycling Day will run all day on Saturday August 25 at Mungret Recycling Centre,  with free entry to anyone bringing metal or clothes for the recycling drive.
A further fundraiser will be held at Mungret GAA Community Centre on Thursday, August  27, when a table quiz will be organised.
