Courts issue too many warrants

A DISTRICT Court judge has noted that there are too many warrants issued by the Courts and that over 124,000 warrants are still outstanding.
Judge Eamon O’Brien made the comments during a sitting of Limerick District Court last week and alluded to the recent figures released into the public domain, that over 124,000 warrants issued are still outstanding. The judge’s comments came during proceedings at the District Court when a number of persons had not turned up to answer matters.

He said: “there are over 124,000 warrants issued and the State is running the cost for these, we are told that there are too many warrants.”
Limerick District Court issued over two dozen bench warrants last week and 16 warrants were executed by either arrest or arrangement.
The figures to which the Judge was referring to, suggest that almost 50,000 warrants are outstanding in the Dublin area with over 15,000 in the Southern Division and almost 14,000 outstanding in the Western Division.
Earlier comments by Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, in relation to the figures, said that the majority related to non court appearances for minor offences and that he has asked the Garda Commissioner to report back in six months regarding the backlog.
