BOOKSELLERS in Limerick are stunned by the phenomenal demand for the novel which has soared in the US best-sellers with readers joining waiting lists to get their hands on it.
‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, a raunchy trilogy by EL James, who is married to an Irishman, has been slated by the critics but readers are voting with their cash.
“It’s unbelievable – it’s more popular than Harry Potter.the Da Vinci code or anything we’ve stocked. I never remember anything like – we’re getting phone call after phone call,” a spokesperson for O’Mahony’s said.
Such is the demand that it has gone to re-print and it will be later this month before the store can stock it again. “When it does come in it will be gone in hours. We have people booking copies on a waiting list”.
Store staff are getting more than 20 calls a day requesting copies.
Women across the age range are buying it but staff will not sell it to younger readers.
“It’s would be an over-21 book and we would recommend that it more suitable for people who are 30 plus and have been in a relationship.
The books are number one, two and three on the New York Times Best-seller in four categories and movie rights have already been sold to Focus Features and Universal Studios. James has also been listed as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People, for her book centering on the raunchy relationship between literary college graduate, Anastasia and billionaire Christian Grey.
