Fiscal treaty referendum passes

OVER 60% of voters in Limerick have backed the European fiscal treaty referendum.

However, the turnout rate of less than 50%, saw the referendum pass comfortably in both the city and county constituencies.

In the city the referendum was passed with the Yes vote taking 60.69% and the No vote 39.31%.

The final count for Limerick City was Yes – 18,933 and No – 12,262.

The official turnout recorded was 48.7%.

Yes campaigners described the result as a decisive step toward recovery while those who campaigned on the No side have called on the Government to deliver on its promises for growth and jobs.

Commenting on the large vote from the Castleconnell constituency Kieran O’Donnell TD, said: “I am very happy to have returned such a high vote from my area.

In a statement from the No side Cian Prendiville, Socialist Party & United Left Alliacne representative in Limerick, said the people were bullied into voting yes.

The count commenced at 9am this morning in the Sports Arena at the University of Limerick and the count had concluded by lunchtime.
