‘Pigtown’ is back in town

THE Belltable Community Theatre Project’s first presentation is Mike Finn’s ‘Pigtown’, in a new production directed by Paul Brennan. A press launch in White House Bar on Monday 21 last told of the evolution of this new production. ‘Pigtown’, which won an Irish Times theatre award when it first toured, will preview at Belltable Arts Centre on Tuesday June 5 and Wednesday 6, the show proper opening on Thursday June 7, 8pm.

This Belltable Community Theatre Project will serve as summer entertainment and is scheduled for a full 15 performances throughout the month.
A reminder of the storyline, set in Limerick’s industrial heyday of bacon production: “Before the night is out, we’ll be taken on a whistle-stop tour of Limerick in the twentieth century, meeting passionate butchers, rebellious workers, ranting priests, pirate broadcasters, crafty shoe thieves, hard working seamstresses, sport mad young fellas, one legged soldiers and a mysterious lady with a gun. Where will it all end? In a coffin, probably”.
Mike Finn, director Terry Devlin and Island Theatre Company deserved all the applause and sunshine with which ‘Pigtown’ was greeted when first platformed. An immensely enjoyable and informative show, it’s feel good nostalgia is punctuated by sensitive cameos and an insight into the emotional and physical poverty of family life back in the rare ould times.
