LIMERICK city will host a weekend of African-themed festivities from Friday May 25 to celebrate Africa Day. Activities will begin on Friday morning with drumming sessions, children’s storytelling and an art workshop in Limerick City Library, followed by a ‘Charity Voices of Africa’ concert at 8pm in the Belltable Arts Centre. The gala concert to celebrate Africa Day will feature an array of singers, bands and choirs from Africa and across the world. Expect to hear Elikya, Kate Njoku, Limerick Youth Choir, BPLO and special guest Damien Varley. Performances will be linked by actors and special guests providing, “real life snapshots and stories” from the African continent.
Other highlights will include ‘May Music in the Park’ at the People’s Park from 2pm on Saturday May 26 and a Family Fun Day in the Daghda Space on Sunday, 27 from 2pm.
Entrance to all events are free, Mayor, Jim Long, stated at the launch of this year’s event that the purpose of Africa Day was, “reaffirming our commitment to integration and our goal of creating a vibrant, inclusive and dynamic Limerick City for all residents, there will be an exciting calendar of events to mark Africa Day which aim to connect communities and to promote intercultural exchange through sport, music and the arts.”
