NEARLY 8,500 runners and walkers were pounding the pavement Sunday as they participated in the Great Limerick Run.
The three main events: the full marathon, half marathon and 6 mile run.
The full marathon (42 km) got underway at 9am and commenced at the People’s Park before heading to the University and Castletroy area taking in the University Campus. The route then returned to the city center for the final 10 km.
The half marathon (21. km) started at 11.30am. The course took the participants past Old Crescent Rugby Club and then heading back to the city along the St.Nessans Road concluding in O’Connell Street.
The 6-mile run began at 1pm, and doubled as the final leg of both the Marathon and Half Marathon events. From Pery Square and taking in Sarsfield Bridge before traveling along Clancy Strand and Kings Island. The race then passed Thomond Park to the finish line on O’Connell Street.
Participants from every county in Ireland took part in the Limerick Run, along with runners from 18 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Spain, Canada, and Denmark.
The men’s marathon was won by Brian McMahon from Dublin. Brian came home in two hours and 27 minutes. The first Limerick man to finish was Mike Cunningham from Cappamore.
Angela McCann from Clonmel won the women’s marathon and Tracey Roche from Raheen came in second.
The post-race party takes place in a tented area outside the Locke bar, George’s Quay from 5pm.
Road closures had begun at 5am Sunday, with the main segment of the race taking place on Pery Square, O’Connell Street and Sarsfield Bridge.
