THE ANDY Lee, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr World title fight, scheduled for June 16 on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas will now take place at another venue.
It is believed that the US Government’s Border Patrol Department have an issue with the Lone Star State venue. It is believed that University of Texas System chancellor Francisco Cigarroa blocked the use of the Sun Bowl for the bout, saying it was too much of a security risk because of violence along the border with Mexico. The stadium is on the campus of the University of Texas-El Paso. A venue for the fight is now being sought by both camps in either San Antonio or Houston.
Lee’s trainer Emanuel Steward, speaking to the Detroit Free Press this week commented, “My biggest concern from day one was safety of fighters and spectators. Andy has a big following coming in for the fight from Ireland, London, New York and Detroit. The safety of everyone has to come first.”
Lee and Chavez, pictured here, are both confident the fight will still go ahead as planned and fans should not worry about the venue change hampering the chances of the World Title Fight going ahead.
Lee, 27, is 28-1 with 20 knockouts. Chavez, 26, is 45-0-1 with 31 knockouts. The interest from Ireland alone would make for a lucrative TV deal which shold secure a new venue.
