Cascina Chicco, Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2010

AS I have said time and time again, it will come to those who wait and in this case, this gem has really come because I have been waiting quite some time to taste a wine of such excellence. With that comes the caveat that it might not be to the taste of every one as the rich red fruit wine is as complex as it is lengthy in it finish.
Alas, FromVineyardsDirect say it’s “a hedonists delight from our friends at Cascina Chicco, one of the very best producers in Piedmont.

“We have searched long and hard for a delicious and approachable version of Italy’s most aristocratic and long-lived of grape varieties. It is a magnificent wine that offers not only perfect current drinking but is an absolute bargain for less than €15 per bottle.”
The tasting note says; “Deep ruby colour with swathes of gleaming red fruit, the nose is rich and complex with hints of blackcurrant, liquorice, tar, spices and rose petals. The palate is smooth, mouth filling with waves of fruit that continue to a very long finish indeed. Quite the most memorable wine which can be enjoyed over the next 4-6 years.

About Nebbiolo and the Langhe
‘Nebbio’ refers to the fog that covers the region and is a derivative of ‘Nobile’, giving us one of Italy’s best and most long lived varieties. They give wines that are supremely food friendly which are most at home with red meat and game, both feathered and furred. Langhe, which is the plural for the Italian word for “hills” (langa), It is located near to the town of Asti in Piedmont, which is peppered with famous names like Barolo & Barbaresco. The Langhe DOC came about in 1994 as a way of allowing producers to be more experimental with their chosen varietals, possible blends, production styles and aging techniques.
