LIMERICK FC picked up where they left off last season when they kicked off their Airtricity League campaign with formidable 2-1 victory over minnows Finn Harps last Friday night in Jackman Park.
After narrowly missing out on promotion last term Limerick have gone into the season as overwhelming favourites to gain promotion, the bookies price is 1/6, however, Harps went in this game with no fear and weren’t too far from pulling off an unprecedented upset.
The Super Blues were not clinical enough on Friday night. The Blues were guilty of missing several chances to allow their counterparts back into the game.
Limerick took the lead with a sublime volley from Padraig Quinn before a real poacher’s effort from Rory Gaffney doubled their lead.
The Ballyboffey men came back in the second half however and even grabbed a goal back to make the league favourites sweat. Former Irish international Dominic Foley was sprung from the ‘SuperBlues’ bench for his debut and aided the side in holding out for their first opening day win in five years.
Limerick will travel to Waterford this coming Friday and will hope to secure all three points once more. Waterford were surprisingly thrashed 6-0 by Wexford last weekend, so Limerick’s Munster rivals will be seeking redemption.
Pat Scully will have a full squad to choose from and will be confident of the win after Limerick have won their last four against the Deise men.
Speaking this week, Pat Scully said “We were delighted to start with the three points from the Finn Harps game. Anyone who thinks we are a group of individuals will look at that game and see a team of players working very hard for each other, the spirit and motivation of the players was very pleasing. Waterford had some strange results preseason and they had another one last week in Wexford. There will be a lot of pressure on them at home on Friday night, but we have pressure as well to keep improving in our performance and results, the players will be well prepared for Friday night.”
