Grant enables Limerick schools to get rid of prefabs

THREE Limerick schools are to benefit from the allocation of special grants that will allow them replace prefabs with permanent classroom structures.

The Limerick schools are St Patrick’s Boys, Monaleen Primary and the Catherine McAuley |School.

Welcoming Education Minister, Ruairi Quinn’s announcement of the grants, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Jan O’Sullivan said she will continue to make further representations on behalf of the schools that still have to avail of unsuitable prefab facilities to accommodate pupils and students.
“The legacy of the previous F.F.Government is that hundreds of schools all over the country were left with prefabs that  where costing the taxpayer millions of euro in rental changes .with little or no return to the State but it is this government’s intention to reduce the dependency on prefabs over the duration of our time in office and these grants will also provide a welcome boost to the local construction sector in providing much needed employment during the construction phase.`”
Minister O’Sullivan said that the special grants allocation is a demonstration of Labour’s commitment to honour a pre-election pledge to reduce the amount of prefabs that are in use in schools throughout the country.
