Munster Rugby Head Coach Tony Mc Gahan will leave the province at the end of this season, once his current contract runs out.
The Australian native is expected to take up a role with the Australian national side alongside Robbie Deans.
McGahan joined Munster during the 2006 Heineken Cup winning season as a defensive coach. Affectionately know as ‘Dumper’ Mc Gahan took sole charge of the Munster set up in 2008, following Declan Kidney’s move to Ireland.
Mc Gahan has been unable to replicate his predecessors success in Europe however. Munster are still without a Heineken Cup win since 2008. However, Mc Gahan did manage to steer Munster to a Magners League title in 2011.
With Mc Gahan now expected to move on, thoughts will turn to who should succeed him. Anthony Foley, current forwards coach with Munster, is the firm favourite. Other names in the hat include, Wayne Smith of New Zealand, Jim Williams, former Munster great, Eddie O’Sullivan, former Ireland manager and of course Conor O’Shea, current boss at Harlequins.
One thing is for sure. Munster’s worldwide status in modern rugby will assure a lot of interest. There will be busy times ahead sifting through CVs. Munster face Cardiff this Friday night in Thomond Pk.
