A WARNING has been issued to jewellers in relation to a con being carried out by a young man in Cork. “The man is 22 years of age and from Dublin and has called to a number of jewellers, particularly in Cork city”, Sgt Brian Broderick explained. “His MO (modus operandi) is to select a valuable ring and inform the shop assistant that his father would provide Visa details to pay for the ring. “His ‘father’ then comes on the phone and provides Visa details, that later turn out to be false.
“This man has managed to get away with rings on a number of occasions, so we are advising jewellers to be very careful in processing this type of transaction and to verify that the card is valid with the appropriate credit card company before parting with the goods”.
