THE government has been called on to introduce a re-registration system for cars that would allow motorists from Limerick to change their registration plates to feature the ‘L’ or ‘LK’ of their home county. Limerick Deputy Patrick O’Donovan FG, who put forward the motion, said the move would help to boost the second hand car market.
“I have raised this issue in a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Finance to see whether he would consider this.
“It is a small measure that could provide a much-needed boost to the car industry, which has been flagging since the end of the scrappage scheme.
“Not only would it give the motor trade a boost, it would provide an additional revenue stream to the Exchequer.
“It may sound like quite a parochial idea to want to have your home county on your registration plate, but I myself would definitely change my car reg to have the ‘LK’ for Limerick on its plate if I had the opportunity”.
He added that the idea presents advantages on a number of fronts, to satisfy motorists and generate revenue for the State through a charge to change the registration, as well as bringing business to car dealers.
