The Allianz Sarsfield Cup, the inter-divisional primary schools football competition for boys, and the Allianz Larkin Shield, the corresponding girls’ tournament go ahead on Friday next November 11th. At the time of going to press, the venues for the semi-finals are Ballyagran GAA grounds and Caherconlish.
These may be subject to change, depending on weather. As was the case in 2010, the finals of both tournaments will be played under lights in Páirc na nGael on Wednesday November 16th. weather permitting.
“We feel it will add to the occasion for the children if the finals are played in the Gaelic Grounds”, says Brother James Dormer, Cathaoirleach of Cumann na mBunscol, “and the opportunity to play under lights will make the games even more attractive for players and spectators.” “The Sarsfield Cup has been a highlight of the primary schools calendar since its first staging in 1983” said Joe Lyons of Cumann na mBunscol. “Most of the Limerick senior hurlers and footballers of today cut their teeth in the Sarsfield Cup,”he added. The Larkin Shield is a newer innovation but it has proven to be a great success. West Limerick, have been the dominant force in the Allianz Larkin Shield but South Limerick and East Limerick have been to the winners’ podium also while Limerick City are the current holders. The competition is named to honour the memory of a former Principal teacher of St Nessan’s N.S. in Mungret who was deeply involved in the promotion of Gaelic Games in the 1930’s
