Goals from Jeffrey Judge (19, 28), Padraic Quinn (45+1), Karl Keogh (55 og) and Denis Behan (59 pen, 84) made sure that Limerick kept the pressure on third placed Cork City, while also improving their goal difference.
With four league games to go, Limerick may need to rely on other sides above them dropping points so that the Blues can make the playoffs.
Shelbourne have all but won the title, while Monaghan sit five points ahead of Limerick and Cork City with two games in hand.
The battle now seems to be coming down to third spot. It is a given that whomever finishes third will beat Galway United in the playoff such is their bad run of form in the Premier Division.
With games to come in the League against Mervue, (this Friday night), Athlone Town at home on Friday October 14, away to Monaghan on Friday October 21 and home again to Waterford on the final day of the season, October 29, Limerick know that they must win all four to have even a shout at making the top three.
Aside from the drama of the league, Limerick are still in the FAI Ford Cup. The draw for the semi-finals of the FAI Ford Cup took place on Monday night with holders Sligo Rovers being paired with the Cup winners from 2008, Bohemians. Between them, these two sides have racked up 23 appearances in the final. The other semi-final pairing pitches either Limerick FC or Shelbourne (who meet next Monday night in Tolka Park) against St Patrick’s Athletic. The last time Limerick won the Cup was in 1982 when Limerick defeated Bohemians 1-0 at Dalymount Park.
Both FAI Cup semi-final ties will take place over the weekend of Sunday October 16.
With that game coming in the middle of the promotion run in, Limerick players could be forgiven for taking their eye off the ball in the league, but Pat Scully has not allowed that.
The Super Blues are now looking at this weekend only and hoping that a win in Mervue will put the pressure on Cork City who are now the main rivals for a shot at top division glory.
