Rapist bound to the peace for two years

A CONVICTED Limerick rapist has appeared in court after he became violent towards staff and security at the Emergency Department of the Mid Western Regional Hospital last month. 23-year-old Dean Barry, of Garryglass Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston was convicted of the brutal gang rape of a woman in Cratloe Woods in 2004 and was back in court last week after he was arrested and charged by gardai for public order disturbances at the hospital.

Described as “outrageous behaviour”, Inspector Jerry Horan outlined the facts behind the case when he told the court that the accused became irate and violent after he was restrained by security staff at 7:40 pm on August 11 last. A disturbance was caused and Barry became abusive.
Barry was said to have lashed out at the staff and kicked chairs and tables and used foul and abusive language in front of children present at the A&E department.
Dean Barry was said to have been “the worse for wear” after being assaulted earlier that evening. He was also said to have consumed alcohol at his mother’s house before he was asked to leave and that he was also on anti psychotic medication.
Barry was before the court with 44 previous convictions including one for being part of a gang that raped a woman in Cratloe Woods in the back of a car in 2004. The woman’s boyfriend was beaten and locked in the boot while the gang took turns sexually assaulting her.
Ted McCarthy, solicitor for the accused said that his client “came across some people and he was assaulted. He has the facial scars from the attack”.
However, Judge Eamon O’Brien said it was distressing enough for people having to go to A&E without having to witness such outrageous behaviour.
Barry was sentenced to two months in prison but it was suspended on the basis he was bound to the peace for two years.
