*Harrowing experience for city centre residents
CRIMINALS reached a “new moral low” in Limerick last week, when a woman was robbed of possessions while visiting her parent’s grave.
The victim was visiting the plot at Mount Saint Laurence cemetery at around 5.30pm on Friday, September 2, when she was approached by three males, who took her handbag by force, striking her with a riding crop in the process.
“I suppose that as a society we accept that some things are still sacred, and respect for the dead is one,” said an appalled garda crime prevention officer, Brian Broderick.
“This crime was surely a new moral low”.
The stolen bag is described as being a large beige holdall containing a Nokia C1 mobile phone, a Kodak camera, a silver Armani watch, reading glasses, €40 in cash and various bank cards.
The culprits were in their early twenties and were wearing hoodies.
They left the scene in the direction of Bengal Terrace.
Gardaí are particularly interested in solving this crime, and are looking for anyone who was in the vicinity of the graveyard at the time of the crime to contact them at Roxboro Road, or call the garda confidential phone line to pass on anonymous information in confidence.
Meanwhile, residents at a city centre apartment suffered a harrowing experience when they were assaulted by three men carrying knives in an aggravated burglary.
At around 3.15am on Saturday, September 3, the three raiders broke down the door of an apartment at The Gables, Mulgrave Street, where three residents were at home.
The burglars assaulted two of the occupants and then produced knives, demanding money.
They escaped with around €600 cash, a Nokia mobile phone, a HTC mobile phone and a set of car keys.
Gardaí believe they may have left the scene in a yellow Audi car.
One is described as in his early twenties, about 5’9” in height, with fair hair, while the two others had dark hair.
“This was a very frightening experience for the occupants of the apartment and we are appealing for anybody who may have seen any suspicious activity in the vicinity of The Gables at the time of this crime, to contact Roxboro Road gardaí”, said a garda spokesperson”.
