CCTV cameras installed
RESIDENTS at Fairview Crescent, Garryowen,, claim they can “sleep more soundly in their beds,” following the installation of a security camera. The southside city estate had to have the camera installed after a prolonged wave of anti-social behaviour, allegedly carried out by local thugs.
Residents have been waiting for the camera to be put in place for the past month.
“We’re all thrilled. It’s been a long time coming. There has been a lot of trouble around here and it has been getting worse in the past few weeks so, this camera is just what we needed. It couldn’t have come at a better time,” one man living in the estate told the Limerick Post. The closed circuit television video camera, worth an estimated €25,000, was purchased by Limerick City Council, who will monitor Fairview Crescent from the hours of 9am-5pm.
Gardai at Henry Street will then take over the monitoring of the area during night time hours.
A spokesperson said: “The camera has been funded by Limerick City Council’s housing department as a result of recent public order issues in Fairview Crescent.
“Gardai have agreed to monitor the camera. The housing department will be operating the camera during the day and we will be providing secondary monitoring of the estate at night”.
It’s hoped the camera, installed on this Tuesday, will be connected to Henry Street, and is expected to be fully operational by this weekend. “The camera is currently being routed to City Hall and then to Henry Street Garda Station over a fibre optic cable,” Gardai added.
Earlier this month, residents breathed another sigh of relief when a local family, who allegedly, terrorised their neighbours, lost a Circuit Court appeal against their eviction. Limerick City Council originally brought the ‘possession order’ against the family in the District Court last year.
Last year there were more than 200 complaints made to Limerick City Council about the behaviour of council tenants.
