THE design team behind the all-new S60 set out to make it look like a four-door coupe and they have certainly succeeded. The S60 looks like no other Volvo, with dramatically sloping lines in the way the C-pillar stretches all the way into the rear light roof. There are new contours to the shoulder slope and all in all, it’s a muscular, sporty look that promises performance.
The S60 has been engineered to drive as well as it looks which is why every new Volvo S60 comes with a dynamic cassis as standard which has been designed to give feed back. Shaper steering and flatter cornering prowess are two of the key advances made in the new S60, important for a car entering the sport-dominated premium small executive saloon market.
As well as revisions to the steering, suspension and damping systems, the Dynamic chassis is also available with the FOUR C-active chassis, giving drivers even more control over the car thanks to its range of dynamic settings.
The high performance D5 version features twin turbos to deliver 205bhp and 420Nm of torque, while emitting just 139 g/km. This is enough for a top speed of 230k/ h and 0-100 km/ h acceleration in an impressive 7.8 seconds. The D3 model uses a single turbocharger to produce 163bhp which is still enough to take the S60 from 0-100 km/h in a fraction over nine seconds.
Every Volvo leaves the factory equipped with a raft of features to ensure occupant and pedestrian safety and the new S60 is no different. With City Safety as standard, the new S60 also offers optional Pedestrian Detection with groundbreaking full auto brake technology with camera. Allied to this are Ready Alert Brakes and Hydraulic Brake Assist, as well as Fading Brake Support.
The S60 is fitted with Volvo’s Advanced Stability Control to detect skidding at a very early stage and also preventive systems to snap in place. A torque vectoring system allows corners to be taken more tightly while reducing the likelihood of understeer.
Inside, the Volvo S60 is a sleek five seater with Electronic Climate Control for heating and ventilation. There’s even an air quality system which stops particles and smells entering the cabin.
