On the Nail and Revival
LIMERICK Writers’ Centre has a big night scheduled for next Tuesday August 9, upstairs at Foley’s Bar on Sarsfield Street. As usual on the first Tuesday of the month, 8pm, On The Nail readings and open-mic invitation takes place, securing specified guests and public to platform their composition.
“This month we launch issue 20 of Revival Literary Journal plus our guests are George Harding, Adam Wyeth and Gary King,” says organiser Dominic Taylor. “Our special authors’ book table will again be in operation, so if you want your book, CD and so on publicised make sure you are represented”.
Gary King was born in Galway in 1963, where he still lives. His poems have appeared in magazines such as Poetry Nottingham, The Burning Bush, Poetry Monthly, Revival, Crannóg, West 47 and The Journal. King won the 2008 North Beach Poetry Grand Slam and his first collection of poems Pluto’s Noon Sky was published by Doire Press in 2009.
Adam Wyeth, born 1978, lives in West Cork. He was a recent prize-winner of the Fish International Poetry Competition, 2009 and a runner-up in the Arvon International Poetry Competition, 2006. His first collection, Silent Music, was recently published from Salmon.
George Harding is a Corkonian who divides his time between Cork and Kinsale. His poems have been featured in various publications here, Britain and America. Harding is an environmentalist, bibliophile, and hurling fanatic and a first collection ‘My Stolen City’ was published by Revival Press in May.
Liddy’s Poetry Workshop
A SEPTEMBER Saturday 10 workshop held by post John Liddy will be a master class in writing a poem. Taking place from 10am to 4pm, it will be suitable for those who have already had some success in having their work published or who are serious about learning the craft of poem writing.
According to Dominic Taylor of host venue, Limerick Writers’ Centre, “This will be a hands-on workshop where participants do some actual writing, using dictionaries, reference books, encyclopaedias, music and anything that gets them flowing. Participants should bring to the workshop one burning idea they would like to tackle.
“They will be guided and prompted to transform their idea into a poem. Every participant will go away with a finished poem(s) or nearly finished”.

Childhood theme for Club Merriman
CUMANN Merriman will run at Lisdoonvarna from Wednesday August 17 to Sunday 21 this year. In addition to lectures and panel discussions, there will be morning symposia in English and in Irish, poetry readings from contemporary poets during Cúirt an Mheán Lae, a walking tour of Lisdoonvarna and Club Merriman in the evenings.
2011 guest speakers include Fintan O’Toole, Professor Sheila Greene, Dr Joe Dunne, Siobhán Parkinson, Eavan Boland and the drama group Jigsaw will make a presentation on its work with youth mental health.
