MILES set to host talk on suicide

WITH Ireland’s suicide rate currently believed to be at the highest in its history, MILES (Men In Limerick Experiencing Separation), is to host a talk at its new base on 25 Glentworth Street on Thursday, July 21, at 8pm. Provisional figures for Ireland’s suicide rate in 2009 indicate a dramatic increase of 4% to 527, the highest recorded.

And according to secretary of MILES, Joe Wallace, suicide has now become the single most common form of death among those experiencing family breakdown.
The Limerick-based charity offers supports to people coping with the effects of a relationship breakdown or who are separated from their family by providing a space to talk, access to information and through working to highlight the needs of those separated from family, locally and nationally.  MILES recently moved from its former home at the Social Service Centre on Henry Street to its new centre on Glentworth Street.
HSE Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention, Bernie Carroll, will chair an open discussion on suicide prevention, a first in a series of training workshops, at 25 Glentworth Street. MILES holds weekly meetings at its new city centre base every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm. New members are welcome.
