LIMERICK and Waterford was always a strong rivalry in Hurling, but now the football sides from both counties are beginning to meet a little too often for everyone’s liking.
This Saturday night at 7pm, Limerick will entertain Waterford in round three of the All Ireland Football qualifiers. Limerick have already lost to Waterford this season in the league, while the two sides met in the championship last season. Limerick winning on that occasion in Fraher Field, Dungarven.
Speaking to Postsport this week, Limerick manager Maurice Horan was quick to draw a line under last weekend’s win over Offaly.
“We need to build on last weekend straight away. The lads all had a point to prove after the Kerry game and they did just that. The Waterford game is going to be very, very tough. They have some top quality players in their ranks and we know from playing them over the last number of years that nothing is going to come easy on Saturday”.
Indeed it will not. Waterford made Limerick work for every point in last season’s 1-17 to 1-09 win. Limerick have been depleted by injury since then and with Waterford having defeated a much fancied London side last weekend, this clash will be worth a visit.
“No team wanted to draw London last weekend”, added Horan. “Waterford won over there and it was a great win. They will not fear coming to the Gaelic Grounds to take us on,” continued the Limerick manager.
With Ian Ryan and Ger Collins accounting for 2-9 from play last weekend, Waterford might not fear Limerick, but they should still be wary.
Verdict: Limerick to win and go on to face Wexford in round four.
