Congratulations to Protobaby, the winners of last weeks final of the Rock To Bialystok original rock band competition. It was a band competition with an enviable prize. Protobaby can now look forward to an all expenses paid trip to Bialystok, Poland to play in front of up to 30,000 people. The band will support Guano Apes at the Bialystok Student Festival on Friday May 20. Protobaby guitarist Tony Monaghan told Limerick Post this week that the band is “over the moon with winning the competition” and is going to “do everything to make the most of this opportunity to represent Limerick”.
The band was up against stiff competition from fellow finalists Dirty Diamonds and Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters and were chosen by the three judges on the night with an online vote from Polish-based music fans also having an influence on the final outcome.
Competition organiser, Ado Cunningham of The Production Office, said that he was “delighted with the quality and the quantity of entries, proving Limerick is still a force in live music in Ireland. Each night I preached at the audience to support live music and the response was usually a big cheer!” The success of the Rock to Bialystok competition will mean that it will become an annual event. Ado Cunningham says, “I hope next year we will run another competition in Limerick, and possibly also in Bialystok, to bring a Polish band here for Limerick audiences to see”
Rock to Bialystok has set the bar high for band competitions. For any new band the prize of getting to play an established festival in Poland will all costs covered is a wonderful and memorable experience and fitting reward for any hard working rock‘n’roll band.
