IT could not be any tighter in Division three of the national football league. With one round to go, every one of the eight teams in the Division has something to play.
The Limerick senior footballers are currently bottom of the table, but a win on Sunday against table toppers Wexford, could get them safe. However, their fate is not entirely in their own hands.
“We have to win our own game. That is all we can do. The table is so tight that a win could keep us up, but we can only start looking at what if’s, if we win our own game.” commented Limerick manager Maurice Horan.
Limerick’s form has mirrored the competitiveness of the league. Wins over Cavan and Louth and narrow losses to Offaly and Westmeath have meant that Limerick find themselves propping up a tight division.
“We didn’t start the league well and we know now that the battle is going to be tough. We played extremely better in the games against Louth and Cavan and we lost out in two tough games against Offaly and Westmeath. We know that those games could have gone either way, so we just have to keep playing the way we are playing and the rest will come”.
Ironically, Limerick, even though they are bottom, are in a strong position in terms of preparing for the championship. The new look management team have used 32 players in the league so far. With this league game being Limerick’s last competitive game before championship, the win and performance are vital.
Maurice Horan agrees, “We know that this is a championship style game. Both teams will be looking to win at all costs. Wexford will need the win for promotion and we need it to try and avoid relegation. The intensity will be championship like and I would ask Limerick fans to come out and supports us, as we feed off of their enthusiasm”
The scenarios on Sunday are complex. If Limerick win, they will be on six points. They then would be looking for Tipperary to beat Cavan in Cavan and Louth to beat Waterford in Waterford. All games kick off at 2.30pm so a thrilling afternoon is in store. Horan concludes, “As I mentioned. All we can do is win our game and we can go from there. June is a long way off yet, so we need to get a win Sunday”
