Drivers enter against traffic flow
THE Castletroy exit on the new M7 roundabout near Annacotty has some motorists in a tizzy.
Now, councillors have called for measures to be taken to reduce the number of dangerous manoeuvres at the exit, seen as a traffic hazard.
Councillor Mary Harty told a Castleconnell area meeting of Limerick County Council that constituents had seen motorists enter the roundabout the wrong way against the flow of traffic.
“Three people have told me that they have witnessed drivers coming from Dublin turn right at the roundabout to get to the Castletroy exit, rather than travelling around the roundabout”.
Cllr Mary Jackman and Cllr Brigid Teefy verified these concerns and said that the issue had also been raised with them.
Cllr Harty called on engineers from the Annacotty Area Office to introduce signage to warn of the dangers of mounting the roundabout incorrectly.
Cllr Michael Sheahan asked that a barrier be introduced along the footpath at the roundabout’s Castleconnell exit.
“A local resident has informed me that there has been three car accidents at the location since the motorway opened.
“This is a concern because this has now become a popular area for walkers”.
Executive engineer at Annacotty area office, John Sheehan, said that the issue would be addressed.
The councillors also agreed to a proposal to introduce traffic lights at the Murroe/Cappamore junction on the Dublin Road.
Cllr Mary Jackman welcomed the initiative and said that it would greatly benefit traffic from Annacotty Industrial Estate (formerly Ferenka).
However, she asked that work also be carried out on the Dublin Road at Finnegan’s Bar and Restaurant.
“There is an enormous volume of traffic merging onto the Dublin Road every day and that section of road needs to be widened”.
