THE long promised brand new, state- of- the- art playing facility to be built on King’s Island, has received a warm welcome from local politicians. Especially delighted with the development is Christy McInerney, a community activist in St Mary’s parish, who has described the new playing facility is “a hugely positive step in the right direction”.
Commenting to the Limerick Post, Mr McInerney said that for decades the lack of sporting facilities on King’s Island had taken its toll on the community.
“Now, however, the plans to build a new all-weather pitch and sports facilities is a huge boost to our community.
“It will be built on the Star Rovers AFC grounds, which has to be commended for facilitating this community venture, and the additional good news is that construction is likely to get underway shortly”.
Delighted that the facility will boost the morale of local people, Mr McInerney said the provision of a modern playing facility will also go a long way towards resolving the current issues that go hand in hand with a modern society, such as anti-social activity and obesity.
“As we’ve all become aware, obesity is one of he most serious health issues facing the current population in Ireland – from HSE records, the statistics show that in 2007, 19% of boys and 17% of girls in the 13-17 year age group were overweight or obese, and that year also, 38% of the population was overweight and 23% obese, which is very serious”.
Acknowledging that funding for the new facility is coming from the Limerick Regeneration Agency, he paid tribute to Brian Geaney, the local regeneration manager, “for his vision and commitment to the local community”.
