Colaiste Iosaef students progress in ‘Junk Kouture’

Colaiste Iosaef in Kilmallock is set to grace the catwalks next April as part of Ireland AM’s Junk Kouture provincial and national finals. Junk Kouture is a recycled fashion contest where students are required to create wearable art and outrageous couture dresses and outfits in Junk Kouture style with a ‘wow factor’.

Students had to rework already used materials that were beyond their intended purpose and craft them into remarkable couture fashion. Colaiste Iosaef had four entries that have qualified for the Munster semi-finals to be held in Clonmel on April 3, with the hope of qualifying for the final to be held in Dublin in collaboration with TV3’s Ireland AM.

The entries are as follows:

‘ANGLO BUST’ by Katie O’Brien, Sarah Tierney & Danielle Lyons: This dress was influenced by the Anglo Irish Banking Crisis and is made entirely from old board games, board game money and playing pieces and old decks of cards.

‘SUNSHINE ON A RAINY DAY’ by Niamh Webb O’Rourke & Aisling Ahern: This dress was made from old broken umbrellas, bottle caps and an old pair of jeans.

‘MAG RAG’ by Sinead McCarthy & Megan Heffernan: This dress is made by painstakingly weaving old magazine covers together and a skirt made from an old plastic party tablecloth.

‘MOTHER NATURE’ by Brena Hourigan & Lynn Dollery: This dress was made from old bed sheets with handmade bows and flowers made from old duvet covers.

All students are Transition Year students from Colaiste Iosaef and will be looking for your vote the week of March 21 when Junk Kouture will be holding an online vote on Facebook for all dresses. Students can gain a maximum of 10 points towards the semi-final qualification so remember to log on and give these local girls your vote!
