Limerickman escapes quake

A Limerickman living in New Zealand’s Christchurch was caught up in the huge earthquake that hit on Tuesday. Ewan Fenton 24, who moved to Christchurch in November last to take up an appointment, was at home when the quake hit. Speaking to the Limerick Post from his apartment, Ewan described the scene: “It is terrifying here as I speak to you right now… after shocks are hitting every five minutes, there are plumes of smoke and rubble everywhere, the town is a no- go area… there is little or no water and around 80% of people are living without power.

“I feel very lucky to be alive, as the buildings across the street from me are completely levelled.  I saw five bodies at the side of the street and that image will stick with me for the rest of my life”.

Ewan, who attended Ardscoil Ris, added: “I will now be relocating to Auckland. it will be safer there, I hear it may take weeks for the power to be restored and it looks like it will take months upon months for any kind of normality to come back to Christchurch” .
