THERE were some great wins for Limerick Clubs last weekend. The season is really hotting up now. Ross O Donoghue previews this weekend’s game. Hopefully the weather will be better this weekend.
Division 1A
Old Belvedere v Young Munster, Anglesea Road, 2:30pm
Young Munster head into this weekend on the back of a season highlight win over champions Cork Con. They showed in that 6-3 win they’re developing a mental toughness to go with their physical edge. They’ll need every bit of it at Anglesea Road against a team who already beat them 31-0 in Greenfields this season. Old Belvedere to win
Cork Con v Shannon, Temple Hill, 2:30pm
There have been few surprises in Shannon’s season to date. They are a limited side and will only be thinking of ‘putting it up to’ champions Cork Con on their home patch. Handling errors and poor decisions still trip them up but they deserve full credit for last week’s 20-15 win over St. Mary’s. Unlikely to build on it here. Cork Con to win
Garryowen v Blackrock College, Dooradoyle, 2:30pm
Garryowen’s mission for February is simple – Overtake Blackrock into 7th place on Saturday and keep them in the rear view mirrors for the remainder of the season. Their main offensive weapon of late is the ‘Garryowen’ itself – and it pays dividends thanks to the pace and pressure of their back three. Good enough for 5 points here. Garryowen to win
Division 1B
UL Bohemians v Bruff, TBC, 2:30pm
The league contest of the weekend will feature the 2 Limerick teams in Division 1B. Bruff have tasted cup metal this season. It’s league mettle they? now as they face a UL Boh’s side finally finding form. Both sides come into the game in winning form but Boh’s deserve more credit. They upended a Lansdowne in Dublin who had previously averaged 42 points per game on their plastic pitch. Bruff accounted for UCC in disciplined fashion. There’s more than Limerick pride at stake for either side. The winner could find themselves in 3rd place. UL Bohs to win
Division 2
Old Crescent v Corinthians. Rosbrien, 2:30pm
Old Crescent haven’t had a League win since the opening day of the season and haven’t been scoring enough points of late to believe that might change. Corinthians come to Rosbrien and the Galway men have Frenchman Aurelien Casanova available at Number 8. Unfortunately for Old Crescent, that’s as romantic as it’s likely to get on Valentine’s weekend. Corinthians to win
Queens University v Thomond, Dub Lane, 2:30pm
Liam Fitzgerald Park has been unplayable of late so Thomond were denied the opportunity of a confidence boosting win over a leaky D.L.S.P last Saturday. The Limerick men travel up north to face Queen’s University and the newly promoted students have been holding their own in Division 2. Unlike Thomond who have slipped into last place. Queens University to win
