FINE Gael Leader, Enda Kenny was in Limerick on Saturday canvassing shoppers and retailers on Cruises Streets and at the Milk Market.
Mr Kenny was flanked with local deputies Michael Noonan and Kieran O’Donnell when he told reporters at Arthurs Quay Shopping Centre: “We are standing one of the best teams in the country here and we look forward to a resounding response from the people of Limerick.”
The Fine Gael leader was photographed with retail customers and sought support from shoppers for his party in the forthcoming general election.
The new Limerick City constituency will have just four seats and there will be five sitting TDs competing for them.
However, National polls in the Sunday newspapers show Willie O’Dea to be safe. While Michael Noonan is poised to knock Mr O’Dea off his perch as the designated poll topper in Limerick City for the first time in 20 years the polls also show that Willie O’Dea’s nemesis, Maurice Quinlivan, is remaining at the bottom of the Limerick battleground as the Sinn Féin train appears to slow.
An online poll carried out by the Limerick Post earlier this week reflects voters’ anger, with a big volume of support for Sinn Féin at local level and a worryingly low tally for Fianna Fáil.
However, the current support for Sinn Féin is most unlikely to be reflected on polling day as the party is doing well nationally but not near the same level as our poll suggests.
