AS REPORTED in the Limerick Post last week, Cllr Kevin Kiely is departing from Fine Gael to contest the general election as an Independent candidate.
Cllr Diarmuid Scully, leader of the FG representation on Limerick City Council told the Limerick Post this afternoon that he is appealing to Cllr Kiely “even at this late stage, to reconsider his decision.
Some weeks ago Cllr Kiely told this newspaper that he had called on FG to add a third candidate, representing the working class to the Limerick East ticket of Deputy Michael Noonan and Deputy Kieran O’Donnell.
He said his request had been ignored by the party headquarters but that he has the support of a backer to run as an Independent.
According to Cllr Scully, however, the Fine Gael group of city councillors believe that “re-electing Deputy Noonan and O’Donnell is in the best interests of both city and county”.
