European City of Sport launched at Thomond Park

GUINNESS Book of Records attempts, sporting exhibitions, an iPhone app and four new sporting events were announced as Limerick was officially launched as European City of Sport 2011 this week.
Familiar faces in Limerick sporting circles gathered.

Eoghan Prendergast of Shannon Development, said over €5 million in revenue will be generated.
Scheduled are The European Duathlon Championships; The World Powerlifting Championships; The Single Speed World Championships cycling event; The EPC European Powerlifting and Singlelift Championships.
Plans are also underway for an International Sports Conference in autumn.
Dr. Vincent Cunnane, chief executive, Shannon Development, said: “Sport is a major economic driver for Limerick as evidenced by the success of the Heineken and Magners league games, the Compromise Rules and the 2010 Special Olympic Ireland Games”.
A novel event planned is world record-breaking attempt for the Haka at City Hall, organised by LIT students.
‘City of Sport’ will also be the theme for the 2011 St. Patrick’s’ Day Festival in Limerick.
“The Fighting Irish” – an exhibition dedicated to boxing, featuring Irish American boxers from New York at the turn of the century, will be on display at UL Arena.
