Three upcoming highlights of Unfringed Festival 2011
Choke Comedy
Limerick’s improv troupe Choke Comedy will return to the Belltable stage for Unfringed Festival 2011 for one night only with ‘Never Mind The Improv…Here’s Choke Comedy’ on Thursday January 27.
This will be its third year performing for Unfringed. Following on from two sell-out shows in 2009 and 2010, Choke Comedy again guarantees a show that will entertain with madcap theatre games and improvised comedy. Two teams will take to the stage to battle it out for the coveted title of best team on the night. As usual with Limerick’s only improvisation troupe, nothing is rehearsed, nothing is planned, it all happens before your eyes with the audience in charge.
Choke Comedy has recently enjoyed a residency at Loft Venue, the new home of Bottom Dog Theatre Company, as well as performing at Electric Picnic, Special Olympics and Limerick Live Festival. The performers on the night of January 27 are John Loftus, Tracy Aspel, Ann Blake, Charlie Cassey, Susan Holland, Norma Lowney, and Jerry O’Mullane with special musical guest Dave Irwin.
The Blanch
“Welcome to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, where you can always be sure of a bargain …especially when you use your 5-finger discount.”
A Carpet Theatre presentation, The Blanch is a grotesque comedy about shopping. A bunch of unhinged, larger than life lunatics will take over The Belltable Theatre to present a “phantasmagorical escalator ride through the contemporary suburban shopping experience.”
Outsize Orlaigh is trying a designer fit, Enda is after the latest phone, Jacintha and Dijon are shopping for free, the schoolboys are looking for girls but with a crumbling economy this scathing satire sees the lunatics literally take over the asylum. The Blanch is an anarchic, high energy, biting comedy that is not for the fainthearted or for children! The Blanch runs in the Belltable on Sat 29 and Sun 30 of January.
Connected
“PERFECT entertainment for those who don’t know their arse from their iPhone” is the description of the comedy romp ‘Connected’, offered by the shows creators Will Irvine and Karl Quinn, which plays at this year’s Limerick Unfringed Festival.
In between stressing over Excel spreadsheets and stalking girls on Facebook, office drones Simon and Daz take the audience into a game of online make-believe that soon spills into the real world. The dull realities and escapist daydreams of the accounts department are examined with wicked humour as their fantasy world runs amok.
From computer geeks to theatre buffs and all who have ever experienced the dreary daily dramas of working in an office, this digital age comedy promises a “razor-sharp script full of boisterous gags and double-act banter”. Connected runs on January 28 and 29 at The Belltable.
