The Old Gendarmes are feted
THE comic legend of Tom and Paschal was rewarded warmly by a civic reception hosted by Mayor Maria Byrne in City Hall on Friday December 17. Appropriately, their swan song of choice was The Old Gendarmes, which we’re reliably told, stirred the hearts and perhaps a tear for those gathered at mayoral chambers.
“It was delightful to be in the presence of two men who have made more generations of Limerick people laugh than anyone else as Limerick city officially recognised the cultural and social contribution of the iconic comedy duo Tom and Paschal,” said one of the organisers, George Lee.
Mayor Maria Byrne spoke of the immense impact that the humour of the two have had through their Christmas Crackers antics and read a congratulatory note sent by the Mayor of Clare.
Delighted with the honour, Tom O’Donnell reminisced about simpler times and declared his two great wishes: a resurgence in the scout movement to give young people grounding in basic life skills, and a re-emergence of community based radio in the city.
His partner in laughs, Paschal O‘Grady, expressed his gratitude and impishly claimed he could finally say that the “curse of St Munchin” was no longer in existence. Limerick City truly does recognise its own.
