Seán South of Garryowen’s nephew may run for Dáil

THE nephew of IRA volunteer Sean South of Garryowen is being touted to run in the upcoming general election in Limerick East.

Owen South, a prominent campaigner against Respite cuts in Limerick could run as an independent candidate.

The photographer led a campaign to restore full respite services to Limerick following cuts earlier this year.

His name has been put in the ring by fellow activist and former Independent candidate Noel Hannon.

“If Fine Gael and Labour get back in they won’t make any difference, whereas Owen would be a real campaigner for Limerick city.

“We need a strong Independent candidate and he would be no worse than any of the existing TDs.

“Limerick needs a new face in politics and the country needs to get rid of the shower that are running it”.

South has been supported by mature student Paul Broderick, who attended Respite marches led by him

“He would definitely be a strong alternative who is very committed to the people of Limerick and he’s a great speaker.

“We need new TDs because those that are there are stuck in a rut and they don’t know how to get out of it”.

When contacted, Mr South, employed by a Limerick based UK newspaper, said:

“I’ve played with the idea… I mean I couldn’t do any worse than the guys that are there.

“If I do run, I won’t be making any promises except that I will do my best for Limerick”.

Sean South was fatally wounded during an IRA attack on Brookeborough RUC barracks in County Fermanagh on New Year’s Day 1957.

He posthumously became revered as the subject of the republican ballad “Sean South of Garryowen” made famous by the Wolfe Tones.
