SITTING Fianna Fail TDs Peter Power and Willie O’Dea have been selected as the party’s candidates for the upcoming general election in Limerick East.
The Limerick East constituency will be reduced to a four-seater at the next election which will mean that one of the five sitting TDs will lose their seat.
Following his selection to represent the party Minister of State for Irish Aid Peter Power made the following statement:
“I am delighted to have been selected for the fourth time by the Fianna Fáil Organisation in Limerick to run as a candidate in the General Election.
“I greatly appreciate the trust and confidence placed in me by the Fianna Fáil organisation throughout the city.
“Without doubt, this will be a difficult election for the Party but I remain confident that we can win two seats in the Constituency.
“Our vote has increased on every successive election since 1992. Fianna Fail also won both the first and the second seat in the last General Election, so we are going into the election from a position of strength.
“In addition, both myself and Willie O’Dea have worked tirelessly on the ground and in communities with ordinary Limerick people, addressing their concerns and I am confident that work will stand to us in the coming election.
“Clearly many of the decisions which we have had to make in Government have been unpopular ones, but I would make the strong point that any decisions have been made in the national interest not the Party interest.
“There is, unfortunately, a tabloidisation of politics in recent times where the smartest sound bite gets the cheapest headline. Unfortunately those who specialise in this type of politics usually have very little substance behind them and I hope that a General Election will expose that.
“I am also looking forward to working with the Fianna Fail Organisation throughout Limerick over the coming weeks. The Party is a resilient one and we are at our best when the chips are down”.
