Mark O’Connor is no stranger to the stage having wielded his axe at maximum volume in Golf and many other bands and collectives but this time it is different as he will tread the boards for the first time in an acting role in CentreStage’s new studio production of Proof.
The Pulitzer Prize winning Proof, written by David Auburn, is a four character play dealing extensively with the subjects of death, dying, family and genius.
It was also adapted for a movie of the same name starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow.
What inspired you to try acting?
“I’ve enjoyed plays at Bottom Dog, The Belltable and last summer’s run of ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ at Centre Stage. I always wanted to try it. Plus I already play Richard Harris songs, and dig his bon viveur lifestyle, so I wanted to try treading the boards like him ;-)”
What differences are you seeing between gigging and acting?
“Playing in a band, I’m either singing my own songs, or interpreting a cover I can identify with. So it’s usually quite personal. Acting is refreshingly different. I still have to be honest, but make the character be believable.”
Any nerves at this stage?
“Opening night hasn’t happened yet, so I’m not sure how the nerves will be. We’ve prepared well, had great fun with the cast, so it should be great. Working with Richie Ryan has been amazing. He is a real resource for the city, with boundless energy, an honest, no bullshit, creative guy.”
Proof plays at CentreSPACE Studios next Thursday, Friday and Saturday November 25 – 27 at 8pm nightly.
