Grieg, Boulez, Kinsella, Haydn

THIS weekend, the Irish Chamber Orchestra takes to the road for its final tour of 2010. The leader is violinist Katherine Hunka who directs two rising stars, Fiona Kelly on flute and Jean Kelly on harp, in a programme of Grieg, Boulez and Kinsella. The night(s) will close with Haydn’s passionate Symphony No. 46.

Don’t miss the ICO’s latest on tour from November Thursday to 18 to Sunday 21 in Limerick, Clonmel, Dublin and Youghal respectively.  Attendances have been seriously large in support of the orchestra this season and the UCH concert is tonight, Thursday 18 at 8pm.
Grieg wrote a large number of lyric pieces, primarily for piano solo which have been compared to a gallery of delicate water colours. Erotik, the fifth in a set of “spring dances”, was dedicated to his wife.  Arranged for string orchestra by Max Spicker, it provides a singing wistfulness to the bell-like simplicity of the piano original. Evening in the Mountains and At the Cradle also feature from his ninth set.
Kinsella’s atmospheric and expressive Hommage à Clarence was composed in memory of the English violinist Clarence Myerscough.  Memoriale by Boulez, is a vivacious chamber concerto for flute with a distinctive French Impressionistic feel that illustrates an airy lightness and luminous textures.
Haydn Symphony No.46 in B major is a fascinating piece of work as well as being a rare extant example of his essays in this key; it is a fine representative of his Sturm und Drang style.
