Crime prevention advice for rural businesses

THERE has been a noticeable increase in burglaries to rural shops and petrol stations, warn gardai, advising owners to ensure that all security systems, lights and alarms are in good working order.
“The type of premises I am referring to are shops and petrol stations and to a lesser degree credit unions and post offices,” said Garda Liam Sheahan.

He has asked owners to be particularly vigilant and keep an eye out for strangers.
“They should make sure all security systems are in good working order, such as lights, cameras and alarm systems”.

Garda Sheahan advised that business owners should have a back up system in the event that phone lines are cut.
“This is the trend now, so it’s very important to have a radio back up to your alarm.
“I would also encourage owners to keep as little money as possible on their premises overnight”.
He recommended leaving tills open at night.
“If they are locked, thieves will simply break them open or steal it altogether”.
