LONG promised toilet facilities at Shelbourne Park have again failed to materialise, fuelling the anger of public representatives.
With a new chairman – Cllr Maurice Quinlivan – in place, the city council’s Environmental Committee has renewed its call on council officials to “deliver the goods” in relation to the requirements at a recent meeting in City Hall.
Referring to the absence of toilet facilities in Shelbourne Park, Cllr Quinlivan said an option was to relocate a public toilet close to the Arthur’s Quay Shopping Centre, that is largely unused, to Shelbourne Park.
However, Cllr Leddin, referring to a Limerick company that will supply portacabins that can be connected to the mains, said that as it is, children playing in the park are resorting to using the bushes, when necessary.
“But we could get these portacabins for €20 a week to service – we should investigate this,” she said.
Cllr Gilligan suggested that the park rangers could, on request, open the existing toilet in Shelbourne Park, which is currently closed to the public.
“Why should it be impossible for a park ranger to open and close the toilet,” he asked
Cllr Quinlivan stressed the need to have the issue resolved, “even on a temporary basis” in time for the school summer holidays next year.
The outstanding success of the park, since it was upgraded, should be built on, according to Sean Griffin, member of the committee, who said, “it is important that the public see the council in a positive light”.
Meanwhile, Cllr Kathleen Leddin welcomed the increased signage on the Clancy Strand Boardwalk that details the dog litter by-laws.
“I’m glad to see that Clancy Strand is being patrolled by wardens and I’ve noticed that the majority of people out walking their dogs were carrying pooper scoopers, but we must keep monitoring the boardwalk,” she told the meeting.
