Cruises St goes live this Saturday

HMV on Cruises Street have designed a fun filled FREE day, this Saturday October 2, that they hope will appeal to everyone from the discerning music fan to families looking for something different on a Saturday afternoon.

Limerick Live will feature live music from some of Ireland’s most sought after acts, performances from Limerick’s premier dance troupes and production companies and comedy acts.

A state of the art stage will be home to live music provided by top Irish bands Fight Like Apes, The High Kings and John Spillane, while a second stage showcases some of Limerick’s brightest talent with performances from Art In Motion Performance Company directed by Jenny Brown and guests, Myles Breen of  Bottom Dog Productions, Comedy Improv, Centrespace Studios and Windings who are about to release their second album ‘It’s never night’ and their new video for ‘Old like J’ has just been completed.
Fight Like Apes
Fight Like Apes are one of a kind inhabiting a lonely outpost in rock’n’roll where the last stop off might be The Cramps … or The Von Bondies before reaching the noisy cartoon world of Mary-Kate “MayKay” Geraghty (vocals and synth), Jamie “Pockets” Fox (keyboard and vocals), Tom Ryan (bass) and Lee Boylan (drums).
Inspired by B Movies, Kung-Fu, wrestling and copious amounts of Buckfast Pockets writes their messed-up pop music, sung with Maykay’s banshee-like vocals backed by a twin attack of dirty synths (They don’t like guitars!) and a diamond hard rhythm section.
In 2007 their debut EP, ‘How Am I Supposed to Kill You If You Have All the Guns?’ generated a buzz in the music media and the Irish blogging community. Tours with The Von Bondies, The Ting Tings, The Prodigy and Kasabian, Irish and European festival shows have further enhanced the band’s reputation as a ferocious live act.
Their first album “Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion” received a decidedly lukewarm critical response but went top five in the charts and quirky songs like “Something Global” and Lend me your Face’ have ensured their status as Irish indie darlings.
Their new album ‘The body of Christ and the legs of Tina Turner’ has just been released. While the first album was a collection of their best songs so far the band this time set out to write an album in its entirety. FLApes worked on new songs in a North Dublin garage then decamped to London to work with producer Andy Gill (Gang Of 4, Futureheads, Red Hot Chili Peppers).
The band say they “played live in the studio, with no more bells, clicks or fancy effects and sculpted dirty great big black chunks of noise, taking the tumescent cadaver of 21st century pop and hot wiring it with a million volts of electro-punk therapy.” The album is full of noisy, three minute punk put-downs and bitchy taunting “When you were playing dollys, I was acting up in the park, You’re not into older men but I guess no one looks old in the dark” from ‘Pull off your arms and lets play in your blood’ and is perfect fodder for what promises to be a potent and riotous couple of shows for Fight Like Apes this Saturday.
Fight Like Apes play Cruises St and later Dolans this Saturday October 2.
