Health Forum at Institute of Technology
THE 2010 Pfizer Health Forum Series will be held in Limerick on Tuesday, September 28, at the Limerick Institute of Technology, Moylish, at 6-30pm Fintan O’Tooey will chair the meeting, and guest speakers include Dr John Barton, Mr Donal Clancy, Professor Ciara O’Neill and Deputy Jan O’Sullivan.
The forums are an expansion of the Health Debate series that ran across the country throughout 2009 and present further opportunity for the general public to hear key opinion leaders discuss health and social issues,
Admission is free of charge.
Significant footfall increase at Market
CHAIRMAN of Limerick Market Trustees David O’Mahony, reports that footfall increase at the revamped Milk Market have been significant.
“We haven’t had exact figures yet but it is clear that footfall at the Saturday market has increased significantly”.
The bookshop proprietor said the key to the future growth of the venue is a higher footfall on other days.
“People need to be aware that there is a location down there that they can go and grab a coffee and enjoy their brunch at the craft fair on Thursdays and again at the city market on Fridays”.
Big investment planned for Miltown Malbay
WEST Clare could be in line for a significant jobs boost after a planning application for a €4m supermarket and community development in Miltown Malbay was lodged with Clare County Council.
The proposed development will consist of a 10,000 sq ft supermarket, 150-space car park, relief road for the town, children’s playground, and an astro-turf facility with associated dressing rooms and lighting.
Local businessman John Jones says the project will regenerate the area and create over 50 jobs, as well as additional seasonal employment. A further 70 jobs will be generated during the 12-18 month construction phase.
Foroige in search of volunteers
FOROIGE, a national youth development organisation based in Newcastle West, is currently seeking volunteers aged 18yrs plus.
The organisation aims to aid the development of young people and works with those aged 10-18 years.
An after school homework club will be run by the West Limerick Youth Initiative during the academic year for primary school children, aged 10-12years.
The homework club will take place twice weekly immediately after school for one hour and 30 mins and aims to provide additional support.
Foróige would like to develop programmes in music and sports for young children with the help of a volunteer.
LIT students take angling award
AN LIT student team has taken the title at the inaugural World Varsities Fly Fishing Championship in Mayo.
Beating off competition from 36 anglers, including entrants from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Finland and the USA, LIT students Brian Barry and Anthony Grey enjoyed excellent conditions to win on the day.
The competition aims to promote angling tourism in Ireland, allowing third level institutes from across the world to meet and build contacts in friendly and relaxed surroundings.
Organisers insisted on a catch and release policy which saw a total of 84 fish being caught and released into Lough Corrib in County Mayo.
