Drunk ‘singer’ found in doorway
LYING face down at the doorway and “singing at the top of his voice,” was the description offered in court by gardai after they found 27-year-old Martin Garvey at the door of Arthur’s Quay Shopping Centre, on August 17 last.
Garvey, a chef, but currently unemployed, and of 3 Aherne’s Row, Oliver Plunkett Street, was said to have suffered with an addiction to alcohol after he lost his job as a chef, “and a handy one at that,” as described by solicitor John Devane.
The accused was before the court answering the charges of Garda Christopher Brennan who, at 19.45 on the evening in question, was on mobile patrol and found Garvey intoxicated at the doorway of the city centre shopping unit.
Inspector Brendan McDonagh said that the accused was charged with a section 4 public order offence after gardai failed to be able to converse with him and then arrested him for his own safety.
The accused had 12 previous convictions.
John Devane, solicitor, said that his client had accumulated a number of previous convictions and that they were all similar nature and connected with his addiction to alcohol
Mr Devane added that he had spoken to Garvey’s former employer as the solicitor was “concerned for his welfare”.
Judge O’Donnell, noting that the accused was “accumulating a number of public order charges,” advised that such drinking “didn’t suit” and fined him €250 for the public order offence.
Fined for sleeping in public toilet
A MAN who was found intoxicated and asleep in a public toilet on the Dublin Road, and then failed to appear to answer the charges in court, has been fined at Limerick District Court.
42-year-old John Conroy of 4 Rhebogue Halting Site, was found asleep by gardai in a public toilet and when they asked him to move on, they saw that he was highly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet.
The accused was said by his solicitor John Devane to have hit upon hard times, and was struggling with a problem with drink.
Judge O’Donnell warned that if drink got him in to trouble, maybe he should consider not drinking.
Conroy was fined €150 for the public order incident and €150 for not appearing in court when originally charged.
