Cup dreams dashed

LIMERICK FC will return to league action this Friday night at home after a roller coaster of a week. Last weekend the Super Blues drew two all with Premier Division outfit and Cup holder, Sporting Fingal in the FAI Cup.

The replay, played last Monday night at Jackman Park, was an occasion for the ages. The Blues battled hard against their ‘money bag’ opponents, only to come up short on penalties.

The holders eventually prevailed by the skin of their teeth after a penalty shootout in a classic cup tie.

The match went into extra time with both sets of players appearing jaded. The best chance of the first period of extra time fell once more to Fingal’s playmaker, Ronan Finn. Only one outcome appeared possible as he closed in on goal. Surprisingly the ball went straight into the side netting and Limerick were let off the hook. A shootout was to decide this fourth round cup tie. With all of the first six penalties scored, Timmy Kiely stepped up. His spot kick was saved by Quigley and was answered by Shaun Williams converting. Sean Kelly sent his penalty high and over the bar as the cup holders progress to face St. Pats in Inchicore in the quarter finals. A fantastic display from Limerick who let no one in the Midwest down with their performance.

Limerick, currently fourth in the table, will look to take this performance into this weekend’s game against eight placed Longford Town. Limerick are now only 10 points off of the top and a win is now a must with merely nine league games remaining.
