IT now appears that it may well be late September when the Limerick County Board announces new management teams for both the hurling and the football panels.
With the next county board meeting scheduled for September 14 and with no sign yet of any sure fire candidates on the horizon, the senior football and hurling panels may be left with just over one month to prepare for the league campaign next season.
Due to GAA rules, inter county panels cannot train formally between November 1st and January 1st. If a manager is not in place until late September, early October, then once again, Limerick will be on the back foot.
The senior football managers spot is wide open at the moment. Names such as Mick O Dwyer, Paidi O Se, Joe Kernan, John Brouder, Maurice Horan and John Quane have all been mentioned.
The hurling job is no different. Donal O Grady, Gary Kirby, Dave Keane, TJ Ryan, Pat Hefferan, Pat Herbert and of course Justin Mc Carthy are all expected to be in with a chance of the job.
The irony of the situation is that the Limerick football post is now more sought after than the hurling job. The new Limerick football manager has a far better base to begin with and may only need some luck to get over the line for a provincial title. The hurling manager on the other hand will have far more work to do, even before the league starts.
