International Jazz Improvisation

JULY 25 sees the welcome return of Philadelphia’s supreme vibraphonist Tony Miceli to Limerick for the third International Jazz Improvisation Workshop. This will be held at the Peter Dee Academy Of Music on Sunday 25 and the day gathers momentum to culminate in a student/ teacher evening jam Upstairs in Dolan’s Pub.

Tony Miceli is an internationally renowned musician and jazz educator. He teaches at the University of the Arts, at Rowan University and at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He is also webmaster and host of www.vibesworkshop.com. which has a membership of 1500 vibraphone players worldwide.

“International Jazz Improvisation Workshop is growing in stature year by year and is now a major event for Limerick,” says Limerick Jazz’s John Daly. Admission is €10 to the wider public for the Sunday July 25 gig starting at 9pm in Dolan’s.

Gilhooly heads Royal Philharmonic Society

Castleconnell man John Gilhooly (36) is the newly elected chairman of Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Society. Leader of London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall for the past five years where he boosted revenue by 50 per cent, Gilhooly’s appointment comes as the RPS heads into bicentennial year 2013. John’s brother Owen is a professional baritone of international note.


Jane Irwin sings with NYOS

THE National Youth Orchestra of Scotland will tour Ireland this Summer with esteemed conductor Diego Masson and a performance by soloist Jane Irwin.

Anton Webern’s Six Pieces for Orchestra Op 6, Alban Berg’s Three Fragments from Wozzeck and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No 5 in C-sharp minor.

The orchestra will begin its tour with a concert at Caird Hall, Dundee before travelling to Limerick, Belfast and Dublin. The  musicians will return to Glasgow for a final performance at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

 Set aside an evening for a pleasing night of contemporary and classical music and vocals by National Youth Orchestra of Scotland on Wednesday August 4, 8pm at UCH.


Salmon Press poets On The Nail

CLOSE the door on the August weekend by attending the On The Nail literary reading on Thursday 5 at The Locke Bar, 8pm start.

Organised by The Limerick Writers’ Centre, this monthly reading and open-mic has built its  audience through a mix of poetry, prose and music at George’s Quay.

Thursday August 5’s guest readers are Dave Lordan, a Derbyshire man and Elaine Feeney from Galway. In 2004 Lordan, now living in Wicklow, was awarded an Arts Council bursary and in 2005 he won the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry.  Feeny is another prizewinner, specialising in poetry slams and has issued her first collection, Where’s Katie, through Galway’s  Salmon Publishing.
