‘A weekend in New York’, musically

AN intense week of wind, brass and percussion instrument of rehearsing under director Ronan O’Reilly and soloist James Dunne on percussion will culminate in two spectacular concerts. It’s Limerick’s good fortune that the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble concert will take place in UCH on Saturday August 21 and the second in Cork on Sunday 22.

Some 70 top young musicians from throughout Ireland have been selected at national auditions to participate in this annual course.

The Irish Youth Wind Ensemble is a national organisation that provides performance opportunities for the cream of Ireland’s young musical talent. Consisting of wind, brass and percussion players ranging in age from 16 to 25 years, the IYWE was founded in 1985 by James Cavanagh and Colonel Fred O’Callaghan to explore the symphonic wind ensemble repertoire.

The IYWE not only provides a showcase for Ireland’s musical talent but over the years, has become a centre of excellence for ensemble playing in Ireland.
