Sunderland AFC 2 Munster XI 1 – THOMOND Park rose it’s feet in respect of slain rugby player Shane Geoghegan as A Day for Shane proved to a major success.
Although the Sunderland overcame the dogged Munster XI the side made up primarily of Limerick players had there noses in front for most of the game.
The homeside went in front in the first half thanks to a sweet strike from Limerick’s John Tierney.
The Munster lads maintained the lead until the second half when promising young striker Martin Waghorn was introduced. What Steve Bruce described as Waghorn’s cutting edge proved to be the difference between the two sides as the striker netted two goals in quick succession.
The Sunderland manager described the day as a terrific success and said that his Premier League side had found it a struggle against the League of Ireland lads. He prised the work of the Shane Geoghegan Trust and said he hoped it was the first event of many to help young children in the region.
The event is expected to raise €50,000 for the work of the Shane Geoghegan Trust.
