A POLISH national who was held in custody on charges of organising and running a brothel from an apartment in Limerick city, has achieved bail following an application to the High Court earlier this week.
26-year-old Polish national Mariusz Glazer, with addresses at apartments at Richmond Court, Mount Kennett Place, appeared in Limerick District Court last week after Judge Tom O’Donnell had refused bail last month. The State, through Garda James Bourke, regarded Glazer as a flight risk as he did not have any ties with the country. However, the ruling was overturned at the higher court and Mariusz Glazer was released after his father posted an independent bail surety of €2,000 to the District Court office this week.
In front of Judge Tom O’Donnell, during a video link hearing from Limerick Prison, the court heard that the accused man would consent to a three week adjournment while the DPP prepared the file against him. The court had heard earlier that the accused man was “possibly part of a bigger ring” and that some preferred directions could be furnished against him.
Judge O’Donnell urged Inspector Gerry Horan to obtain the directions of the DPP for the next sitting.
Glazer was subject to an executed search warrant in relation to an apartment held and used by him.
It is alleged that the defendant was found at the apartment with a laptop, several mobile phones, bank lodgement slips and sums of money on his person.
Garda James Bourke had told a previous sitting that a follow-up search in another adjacent apartment yielded 13 phones, evidence of money transfers outside the jurisdiction and two females, believed to be prostitutes.
He added that during the course of the searches, the mobile phones were ringing and they took statements from four alleged customers that called to the apartment.
Garda Bourke added that on the following day, after a search of a third apartment, it was alleged that a laptop, further sums of money and evidence of prostitution were found.
He added that the 26-year-old made certain admissions, and that the State were in possession of witness statements to support the charge.
According to direct evidence given by gardai, Glazer is believed to be part of a “bigger prostitution ring that could be connected with the trafficking of women from mainland Europe”.
Glazer is to appear in court on July 8 next, where the directions of the DPP and any further or preferred charges are to be furnished to the court.
